Healthy skin can be foundational to our confidence and self-esteem — something is just empowering about having smooth, hydrated skin that seems to glow from within. Spa treatments such as facials and laser or light therapies can produce that kind of result, though many require recovery time or cause temporary redness. The Hydrafacial is one option that’s been shown to deliver results right away.
“A Hydrafacial combines advanced technology with customizable care to deeply cleanse, exfoliate, and hydrate the skin in one seamless treatment,” says Joee Nelson, master esthetician at the LifeSpa in Eden Prairie, Minn. “The result is immediately refreshed, smoother, and more radiant skin that lasts for weeks. I love Hydrafacial because it delivers consistent results that can be customized to your needs while deeply cleansing, exfoliating, and hydrating the skin for an immediate, healthy glow.”
To learn more about this popular facial treatment, we asked Nelson and Ariana Hernandez, corporate account director at Hydrafacial, to break down the Hydrafacial, its key benefits, and the innovation behind its technology.
What is a Hydrafacial?
Created in 1997, Hydrafacial is the category creator of the original hydrodermabrasion treatment, a non-invasive, hydrating skincare service using a specialized machine to exfoliate skin and vacuum impurities while simultaneously delivering nutrient-rich serums. To date, Hydrafacial is the No. 1 hydrodermabrasion treatment in the United States.
“The Hydrafacial took hydrodermabrasion to a whole new level with its proprietary Vortex- Fusion™ technology, a mechanism that deeply cleanses, exfoliates, and removes impurities while helping active ingredients absorb more effectively into the skin,” Hernandez explains.
Using this technology, a Hydrafacial-certified esthetician conducts a treatment that includes up to seven therapy features, including lymphatic drainage, gentle exfoliation, a light peel, painless extractions, customized boosters, LED light therapy, and deep hydration.
“During treatment, a provider uses the Hydrafacial handpiece — also known as the ‘magic wand,’” says Hernandez. “Various tips can be applied to this handpiece to cleanse, exfoliate, and extract impurities while simultaneously infusing hydrating serums. Backed by years of science and innovation, the result is instantly healthier, glowing skin — which we call the signature ‘Hydrafacial Glow.’ It is noninvasive, pain-free, and has no downtime. Results are immediate and continue to improve with regular treatments.”
Nelson’s favorite benefit of a Hydrafacial treatment is the resulting glowy skin. “The level of hydration that a Hydrafacial brings to the skin shows immediately following treatment,” she says. “It is truly incredible. It’s that glazed donut look.”
Are there different types of Hydrafacial treatments?
Depending on the service you book, Hydrafacial treatments can vary in length of time and therapy features. Some treatments include Hydrafacial boosters, which are highly concentrated, specialized serums to target specific skin concerns like wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, acne, and more. For example, at LifeSpa, there are three Hydrafacial service options.
Signature Hydrafacial: The Signature Hydrafacial can be done in as little as 30 minutes. The signature service includes four foundational steps: cleanse, peel, extract, and hydrate. You experience the four essential Hydrafacial solutions: Activ-4™ Cleanse Solution; Beta HD™ Extract Solution; Antiox+™ Hydrate and Glow Solution; and Rinseaway™ Complete Solution.
Deluxe Hydrafacial: The Deluxe Hydrafacial is a 45-minute treatment that includes the foundational steps and adds LED light therapy and one specialized booster serum to address a specific concern (think fine lines, acne, or redness). The addition of the LED light therapy involves using a clinically proven device that can be set to red light or blue light. Red light helps to support the skin’s natural collagen production for firmer-looking skin, while blue light is known to be effective against bacteria to help clarify the skin. (Learn more: “What is Red Light Therapy?”).
Platinum Hydrafacial: The Platinum Hydrafacial is a 60-minute treatment that includes the foundational steps, plus LED light therapy, a booster serum, and detoxification through lymphatic drainage. This can reduce puffiness for a more sculpted, lifted appearance. Lymphatic drainage is done via the lymphatic function that uses suction and a lymphatic wand to gently drain the lymphatic system in the face.
What are the benefits of a Hydrafacial?
Hydrafacial treatments offer several benefits for skin health and quality. “This treatment is clinically shown to hydrate and visibly improve clarity and texture of the skin,” Hernandez says. “It supports skin health by addressing the essential building blocks of healthy skin. It removes impurities and dead skin cells, supporting the skin’s natural regeneration process and infusing hydrating and nourishing ingredients.”
Visibly Refined Pores
Hydrafacial treatments deeply cleanse pores, remove impurities, and optimize skin hydration, helping to improve skin clarity and reduce congestion. In a clinical study, physicians found that a series of Hydrafacial treatments significantly reduced the appearance of pore size, one of the key markers of overall skin quality.
Improved Texture
Hydrafacial treatments combine mechanical exfoliation, chemical exfoliation, and infusion of skin-nourishing ingredients to support optimal skin renewal. Exfoliation helps remove buildup and accelerate the skin’s natural renewal cycle, revealing smoother, healthier-looking skin. Clinical studies show significant improvement in skin texture following a series of treatments.
Softened Fine Lines
Hydrafacial treatments address fine lines by improving hydration, supporting skin renewal, and enhancing overall skin quality with the infusion of hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid. Clinical studies have shown reductions in the appearance of fine lines, along with improvements in firmness and elasticity following treatment.
Enhanced Hydration
Hydrafacial treatments simultaneously replenish moisture while gently exfoliating the skin, helping to optimize hydration without irritation. The technology is clinically proven to increase the absorption of topical products versus manual application, which enhances the effectiveness of hydrating ingredients.
Personalized Results and Continued Evolution
Hydrafacial also continues to evolve through innovation focused on personalization and results-driven treatments to continue to offer new and added benefits.
Over the years, the brand has expanded its range of targeted boosters to address specific skin concerns more precisely. A recent example is the HydraFillic with Pep9 Booster, developed in response to growing demand for treatments that target fine lines and wrinkles. Formulated with a proprietary blend of nine peptides, this booster helps hydrate, support the skin barrier, and soften visible signs of aging so skin can look firmer, smoother, and more radiant.
How often should I get a Hydrafacial?
Even after a single session, skin typically looks noticeably fresher and more radiant, according to Hernandez. Clinical findings after one treatment show reductions in dirt and sebum, along with significant increases in moisture and hydration.
Hernandez notes that results do become more pronounced with consistent treatment. “Because each treatment builds on the last, a series of sessions can lead to even more visible improvements in pore size, texture, firmness, and overall skin quality.”
Over time, regular treatments also help support the skin’s natural renewal process, improving hydration, strengthening the skin barrier, and promoting a smoother, healthier, more youthful-looking appearance.
“Generally, I recommend to my clients to get a Hydrafacial every four to six weeks,” Nelson says. “If someone is really looking for drastic changes, I often suggest a series of six treatments every seven to 14 days, followed by regular treatments every four to six weeks. Hydrafacial truly strengthens the skin. I equate it to a workout at the gym, the more you do it, the stronger and healthier the skin becomes.”
How is a Hydrafacial different than a more traditional facial?
The key difference is the Hydrafacial device’s noninvasive Vortex-Fusion™ system. Hydrafacial uses advanced, device-driven technology to combine multiple skin therapies in one treatment. It is also clinically proven to enhance absorption and efficacy. It delivers a consistent, results-driven experience backed by science and clinical data.
“Its blend of science, consistency, and visible results is what has made Hydrafacial a standout in modern skincare treatments,” Hernandez says.
Hydrafacial’s extraction process is also unique. The handpiece device deeply cleans pores and exfoliates the skin without discomfort, redness, or harsh squeezing.
During and after your treatment, you can see the debris that’s extracted from your pores in the “gunkie jar,” which is a small, clear canister on the treatment machine that collects oil, dead skin cells, residue, and impurities removed from your pores. It clearly shows just how deeply cleansed the skin is after this treatment.
Is a Hydrafacial right for me?
Because it can be tailored to individual needs, Hydrafacial is appropriate for all skin types, and Nelson often recommends this service to her clients with sensitive skin.
“This is key for me and my clients,” Nelson says. “I had one client whose skin reacted to products and nearly all treatments, but the Hydrafacial became the turning point for her skin. I started a plan with her that included a gentle Hydrafacial, keeping the wand on a low setting and finishing every treatment with the LED red light. After six every-other-week treatments, her skin was no longer reactive; it’s thriving. The right treatment can change everything.”
