In her book, You Are a Magnet, author and life coach Amber Lyon makes the case that our ability to choose and change creates opportunities for each of us to live a more satisfying, meaningful, and joyful life in the here and now — but we have to do so consciously and intentionally. In this episode, we delve into the four guiding principles of Lyon’s work and how we can use choice and change to break free from the notion of “this is just the way I am.”

Amber Lyon is the founder of the wellness platform Modern Mind, a magnetic mindset coach, and the author of You Are a Magnet, which is out in early June. In 2018, Amber moved to New York to pursue modeling before ending up in the world of wellness, studying neurolinguistic programming and hypnosis. She has worked with hundreds of clients to create alignment between their dreams and their actions.

Lyon’s book, You Are a Magnet, is organized by four guiding principles: alchemizing fear, cultivating courage, the magnetic mindset, and living through joy. In this episode, she explains each, and why they’re each important to step through so you can embrace and enhance your own power to attract the life you want.

  1. Alchemizing fear: This stage is about understanding the state of our mind and anxiety, and where our resistance to change is coming from. When our nervous systems are dysregulated and we’re carrying fear in our minds and bodies, the primary need is to get back to equilibrium; this makes it difficult to show up in a new way. This phase is all about aiming to improve your capacity to be aware of the thoughts that are holding you back. It’s an awareness exercise of, How can I be more aware of my behaviors, my mindset, my outcomes, and the role I play in creating my life?
  2. Cultivating courage: At this point, you’re feeling regulated — you have some understanding of self and tools in your toolkit — and are making the transition to explore how you can start showing up in new ways, using your voice, and rocking the boat in the needed areas of your life.
  3. The magnetic mindset: This stage is about tapping into your vision. You’re now showing up in new ways and allowing yourself permission to be more fully yourself. You are ready to discover, How can I tap into what I’m inspired by? You’re looking to gain clarity about who you are and what you value, and implement that into your scheduling and how you spend your time, what you do for work, etc. It’s a stage filled with practicality.
  4. Living through joy: You have your goals, your nervous system is soothed and regulated, and you have capacity to show up in new ways — but you don’t want to get so caught up in looking at the horizon that you miss everyday moments. This stage is about building in the celebration of daily joy: moments where you’re fully present with and recognizing the beauty of the ordinary and mundane.
