This conversation delves into education surrounding GLP-1 medications, including the following:
- GLP-1 stands for “glucagon-like peptide one.” They are a class of medications that work in the body to stimulate the natural receptors of the GLP-1 hormone that we would normally make.
- Peptides are small chains of amino acids that perform a specific task in your body. The body makes peptides to regulate homeostasis; our bodies make thousands of peptides.
- GLP-1 agonists have been found to improve insulin sensitivity, better control blood-sugar levels, lower gastric emptying times (which helps with satiety), and support weight loss and appetite suppression.
- Proper titration of GLP-1 dosage by individual is essential to minimize side effects and maximize benefits.
- A healthy use of GLP-1 medications involves using it as a tool within a comprehensive and holistic wellness plan that is individualized and includes nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle habits like stress management.
- Though appetite suppression is a primary effect of GLP-1s, getting adequate nutrition — including plenty of protein — on a regular basis (three to four times per day) is essential for maintaining, and even building, muscle mass and bone density.
- A commitment to lifestyle behavior modifications can ensure long-term health and sustainable success after titrating and going off GLP-1s.
