What Are the Benefits of Supplementing With Amino Acids?

A Life Time dietitian and trainer highlights the purpose of using an amino-acid supplement for workout recovery.

Amino acids are important protein building blocks that your body needs to recover from hard workouts and support post-exercise muscle repair. A few of the benefits I like to highlight for my clients include:

  • Support for a leaner physique. Research shows that essential amino acids support muscle protein synthesis, which helps build shape and tone. They also help the body hold on to muscle when in a caloric deficit. Specifically, including 3 grams of leucine per serving and a 2:1:1 ratio of branch-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine are suggested to drive superior results.
  • Decreases hunger. Essential amino acids stimulate leptin levels, which is a hormone that increases feelings of satiety. The blend can also help support optimal levels of blood sugar which is needed for appetite control.
  • Reduces soreness from exercise. Essential amino acids can be used directly by the muscle for fuel, so supporting optimal amino acid pools in the body can help begin the recovery process from micro-tears created during exercise.
  • Benefits your joints. Supporting normal inflammation levels is important for injuries, health, and overall joint health, and essential amino acids play a role in doing so. The LTH Rally Amino Recovery blend contains both L-threonine and L-cysteine, which can play a role in joint health.
