How to Make Your Own Deodorant

A DIY deodorant alternative that’s affordable, effective, and a cinch to whip up.

Make-your-own-deodorant

Sweating is a necessary and natural process — it cools our bodies and flushes out toxins — but it doesn’t have to be a smelly affair.

An effective deodorant is the key to avoiding unwanted aromas, but it can be tricky to find a commercial deodorant that doesn’t contain potentially noxious ingredients. There are plenty of natural and organic options, but they’re often expensive and packed with fillers.

That’s why we love this simple do-it-yourself recipe from PassionateHomemaking.com. It calls for basic ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen cupboards. And it allows for healthy perspiration while stopping stink in its tracks.

Homemade Deodorant Recipe

Makes about 1 cup, enough for about three months when used daily.

Ingredients

  • 6-8 Tbsp Coconut oil (solid state)
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder or cornstarch (arrowroot is preferred)
  • Favorite essential oil (optional)

Directions

  1. Combine baking soda and arrowroot powder or cornstarch. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil if you’d like.
  2. Add the coconut oil by the tablespoon and work it in with a fork or hand blender until the mixture is firm but pliable. It should be about the same consistency as commercial deodorant: solid but easy to apply. If it’s too wet, add more arrowroot powder or cornstarch to thicken.
  3. Scoop the mixture into a small container with a lid .
  4. Apply with your fingers as needed.

Note: Discontinue use if you have any sort of allergic reaction.
