Finding Light in the Dark
With Veteran and Fitness Instructor Charles “Traps” Robinson

Season 9, Episode 12 | November 12, 2024
All of us will face challenging circumstances in our lives, and while those situations will look different for each of us, we can find commonality in and learn from others’ stories. In this episode, Charles “Traps” Robinson, a United States Marine Corps combat veteran and current group fitness instructor with Life Time, is sharing some of his story, including the personal struggles he’s faced and how fitness played a pivotal role in his healing process. His story serves as inspiration for others to find whatever light they can in dark times and to keep moving forward.
Charles “Traps” Robinson is a 5-star ELI group instructor at Life Time City Centre Houston in Texas. He is a United States Marine Corps combat veteran who has competed in American Ninja Warrior season 8, is a HYROX athlete and ambassador, and is a motivational speaker.
In this episode, Robinson shares some of the personal mantras that have helped guide him. They include the following:
- You are only one yes away. When Robinson applied to American Ninja Warrior he was one of some 60,000 applicants — yet he was only one yes away from competing. When he first got into fitness, he approached several different companies that he heard “no” from — yet he was only one yes away from finding his place at Life Time.
- Failure is not final. The only way something becomes final is if you quit, Robinson says. “Failure is a part of life,” he says. “But you learn from it, you come back and attack it again, and you can get better at it.”
- The sky is not the limit, it’s just the view. Despite facing challenging situations at various times in his life, Robinson says he could see there was something “over there” that looked better to him. “The sky is not a limit, it’s just a view — it’s a bar,” he says.
- You must move like everything will work out in your favor — because it will. Robinson says this thought was particularly important when he was battling depression and suicidal thoughts. He shares that there was a bridge he would run past and that choosing to continue moving — literally getting up every day and running or working out — is what he kept him going.
- If you can’t find the light, then you must become it. Robinson shares that he’s had to deal with death and other devastating situations throughout his entire life, so he had to “became my own light.” He says he never expected anyone to “save” him, but rather chose to stand firm and take to heart his mother’s saying of, “Your faith is not faith until it’s been tested.”
