Eat well, exercise regularly, maintain healthy habits — this guidance is foundational for achieving your health and wellness goals. But what happens when you’re doing all the “right” things and still not seeing the progress you expect?

This can be frustrating and disheartening and leave you questioning if you’re doing something wrong. And while it might be tempting to see if the “quick fixes” and “miracle” supplements you see on social media, experts advise against this. It’s better, they say, to take a deeper look at what’s going on inside your body.

“When you feel like you’re taking care of yourself, but not seeing results, I definitely recommend working with a provider to do comprehensive bloodwork,” says Rahul Iyengar, MD, medical director for MIORA at Life Time in Franklin, Tenn. “Let’s look at what’s going on ‘under the hood’ — that can give us better insight and lead us to the right solutions. There’s so much on social media where people are simply saying, ‘You need this supplement stack,’ or ‘You need this regimen,’ but they don’t know you — your lifestyle, your individual goals, or what’s going on inside your body.”

From hormonal imbalances to metabolic roadblocks, your body’s internal systems could be working against your best intentions, and it might be time to take a closer look at the source of your body’s resistance. We asked Iyengar for his advice on how to do this.

Start with comprehensive bloodwork.

Bloodwork is the first step in taking the guesswork out of caring for your health.

“One of the most important things you can do to empower yourself with knowledge about your health is bloodwork,” says Iyengar. “It can help both you and your provider better decide on next steps. For example, if you’re super low energy, bloodwork might find that you’re low in vitamin B12, which is required for optimal energy. Then, we know for sure that one solution to your issue is to boost your vitamin B12 intake.”

Bloodwork can also help identify hormone imbalances that could be the cause of your issues.

“If you’re feeling fatigued or having trouble losing weight, we may find your thyroid is not functioning optimally, or your hormones are out of balance,” says Iyengar. “Instead of guessing what the issue is and paying a lot of money for random supplements or spending time researching on your own, bloodwork can give you a lot of the answers you may be looking for.”

Keep track of your symptomology and lifestyle habits to see the bigger picture.

Comprehensive bloodwork is just the first piece of the puzzle. Your symptoms and lifestyle habits are also factors to what’s going on inside your body. For example, if you’re experiencing digestive problems, it could be related to several different functions in the body.

“If you’re having gut issues, it’s likely not just about the gut,” Iyengar says. “Your instinct might be to go to a gut specialist, but the issues you’re experiencing could actually be related to mental health, supplements that aren’t agreeing with you, or a hormonal imbalance. It’s important to look at that bigger picture. Your gut symptoms are what’s presenting, but we need to look at all the bodily systems connected to your gut to get to the root of the issue.”

Work with a trusted provider who gets to know you and your goals.

Many services provide bloodwork, but Iyengar stresses the importance of working with a medical professional to interpret the results and determine the right path forward.

“You can get bloodwork done online, but then you often get an AI-generated report or simply a listing of your numbers,” he says. “This report isn’t personalized to your symptoms, your health goals, your health history, or your family health history. All those things can be important factors when interpreting the results in a way that is useful for you.

“A big, long report can also be confusing,” he continues, “and a provider can help you decipher what information is most useful to you and what that means in the context of other factors. Partnering with a provider who will take time to get to know you and work with you on your goals is the best bet for getting the results you’re looking for.”

Once you’ve done the initial bloodwork and begun making changes to support your health, working with a provider is important for continued success.

“Having a trusting, ongoing relationship with your provider can also lead to more structured monitoring over time,” says Iyengar. “Depending on your results, I may recommend rechecking a comprehensive blood panel regularly, whether that’s annually or every three to six months.”

Don’t wait until something is really wrong to go to the doctor.

While it may seem counterintuitive to get bloodwork or talk with a physician when you’re feeling well, Iyengar emphasizes the importance of getting comprehensive bloodwork annually, or even more regularly, as directed by your provider.

“A lot of people don’t go to the doctor because they think, ‘Well, I feel good,’” he explains. “But there’s a difference between feeling good and having the data to support that. And if you’re doing regular comprehensive bloodwork, we can catch patterns and make changes to prevent feeling bad down the road. The goal is to fine-tune things as you go, so you don’t end up experiencing symptoms in a year, or five, or 10. We can instead see what’s coming ahead of time.”

If you’re seeking a deeper understanding of your health, you can partner with MIORA for a medically guided interpretation of your comprehensive bloodwork and symptoms. This includes a personalized action plan that may include nutrition strategies, training guidance, advanced supplementation, peptides, GLP-1s, hormone therapies, or other targeted interventions, when appropriate. Every plan is supported with ongoing touchpoints, retesting, and refinement to ensure progress is both safe and sustainable.
